Background & Aims: Most patients who undergo coronary angiography have f ear and anxiety before procedure and their lives are endangered by some Complications such as dysrhythmia,spasm and vessels rupture.The non-pharmacological treatment such as aromatherapy can effective in reducing anxiety and thus prevent these complications of anxiety. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of aromatherapy on the anxiety of patients experiencing coronary angiography. Materials & Methods: IN this clinical trial study, 78 patients, who hospitalized in sari Fatemeh-Zahra Hospital for Coronary angiography were interred in to the study and were divided to two groups. Ten people were excluded from study. In the control group (33 patients) we used sterile water as placebo and in case group (35 patients) we used oil inhalation by non absorbent polyethylene paper impregnated by two drops of essential oil for 20 minutes. The levels of anxiety were measured in to groups by Spill Berger state –trait anxiety scale before and after aromatherapy. The data were analyzed using Spss-19 and chi-square test and Fisher s exact test and pair test. Results: The results showed that the level of anxiety in case group after aromatherapy was lower than the control group and this reduction was statistically significant difference (p = 0.025) and the level of anxiety in aromatherapy decreased after treatment (p >0/001) but control group we did not any between the level of anxiety before and after treatment (p=0/831). Conclusion: This study showed the effects of inhalation aromatherapy with orange essence for reduction of anxiety in patients experiencing coronary angiography. Thus, it can be used for decreasing anxiety in clinical situation.
