Evaluation of the Effects of Wasted Anesthetic Gases on Pregnancy Outcome in Operating Room personnel
Abstract:   (13121 Views)

Background and Objective: It seems that trace concentration of anesthetics presented considerable risk to operating room personnel, on the other hands some studies concluded that prevalence of abortion was substantially higher in female anesthetists than in females working outside the operating room. We designed a study for evaluation of the effect of vapor anesthetics exposure on outcome of pregnancy in female operating room personnel.

Materials and Method: In a retrospective case control study 118 females who working in operating room (study group) and 180 females who working outside the operating room (control group) was enrolled in this study. History and outcome of previous pregnancies was obtained and recorded.

Results: Mean age range in study group was 37.5±5.5 and in control group was 36±5. Data showed 43(22.8%) abortion from 189 pregnancies in study group, whereas in control group from 375 pregnancies, 25 (7.6%) lead to abortion (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Because vapor anesthetic exposure can be hazardous for operating room personnel and their pregnancies outcome, further attention for scavenging and elimination of wasted gases was recommended. Also further multi-central studies for evaluation of the role of these gases must be provided.
