پیش‌زمینه و هدف: درک عمیق رفتارهای بیماران، خانواده آن‌ها و متصدیان ارائه‌دهنده خدمات مراقبت سلامت در بخش اورژانس می‌تواند به‌صورت بالقوه در تسهیل انتظار کشیدن، برطرف نمودن بسیاری از انتظارات معقول، افزایش رضایتمندی، و بهبود پیامدهای بیماران کمک‌کننده باشد. مطالعه حاضر با هدف تبیین و توصیف فرهنگ انتظار کشیدن در بخش اورژانس انجام گردید.
مواد و روش کار: مطالعه اتنوگرافی متمرکز حاضر بر اساس 12 گام روش اسپردلی (1980) در بخش اورژانس مرکز آموزشی درمانی امام رضا (ع) تبریز انجام گردید. مشارکت‌کنندگان شامل بیماران، همراهان، اعضای تیم درمان و سایر افراد دخیل در ارائه خدمات مراقبت سلامت بودند که با استفاده از روش نمونه‌گیری هدفمند انتخاب شدند. جمع‌آوری داده‌ها تلفیقی از سه روش مشاهده مشارکتی، مصاحبه و بررسی اسناد موجود بود که تا نیل به اشباع داده‌ها ادامه یافت.
یافته‌ها: درمجموع شش الگوی فرهنگی پدیدار گردید که عبارت‌اند از: (1) بیماران و همراهان آن‌ها در سایه کم‌اطلاعی، زمان را با بلاتکلیفی سپری می‌کنند، (2) همراهان اضافی خود را مکلف به تداوم حضور کنار تخت بیمار می‌دانند، (3) تداوم حضور همراهان اضافی، تسهیل گرِ گاه بازدارنده اقدامات بخش است، (4) نقصان همدلی بر دریافت و ارائه خدمات اورژانس سایه افکنده است، (5) کنش‌های مراقبتی درمانی عمدتاً تک‌بعدی می‌باشند و (6) تیم درمان برای جبران نقصان‌ها و تأخیرهای کاری به خودسازمان‌دهی پویای امور می‌پردازند.
نتیجه‌گیری: یافته‌های این مطالعه می‌تواند مقدمات برنامه‌ریزی در راستای نزدیک نمودن میزان تطابق ابعاد مختلف کیفیت مراقبت‌های بخش اورژانس بالأخص ازنظر فنی و بین فردی با نیازها، توقعات و ترجیحات بیماران و همراهان آن‌ها را فراهم نماید.
