Background & Aim: As children enter their teenage years, the parents' relationship with them undergoes some changes and causes conflicts. One of the significant dimensions of these conflicts is the conflict between mother and child, which interventions such as mentalization-based therapy are used to reduce these conflicts. The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of treatment based on mentalization on object relations and emotional expression in conflicting mother-child relationships.
Materials & Methods: This study used a semi-experimental pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of all mothers and their teenagers referred to counseling and psychology clinics in Shiraz City in 2022 due to relationship conflicts. The study sample consisted of 40 mothers selected using convenience sampling which randomly assigned into two groups of intervention and control (20 participants in each). The measurement tools were the Parent-Child Conflict Questionnaire (PCS), the Object Relations Questionnaire (BORRTI), and the Emotional Expression Questionnaire (EEQ). Data was analysed using SPSS-23 software and a multivariate covariance analysis test at a significance level 0.01.
Results: The results showed that the mean score of the object relations variable decreased from 33.71 to 21.52 in the intervention group between the pre-test and post-test phases (P<0.01). Additionally, the mean score of the emotional expressiveness variable in the experimental group increased from 39.73 to 57.13 between the pre-test and post-test stages (P<0.01).
Conclusion: The results showed that mentalization therapy had a positive impact on enhancing object relations and emotional expression during conflicts between mothers and children. So, it is recommended that counselors and therapists utilize mentalization therapy to diminish these conflicts. Furthermore, training focused on improving relationships and enhancing emotional expression may be crucial in decreasing disputes between parents and children.
