Abstract
Background & Aims: Electroconvulsive therapy is an effective method for many kinds of psyche disorders. This method is used when patients can’t tolerate drug side effects. Dizziness and sense confusion especially in the first 30 minutes after being conscious is a prevalent side effect of this therapy method. This study was aimed to investigate education effects on consciousness and cognitive status of electroconvulsive patients.
Materials & Methods: This experimental study was done on 60 patients being treated with electroconvulsive for the first time. Conscious level of patients in 5, 15, 30, 60 minutes and their recognition status in the 15, 30, 60 minutes after electroconvulsive were compared. Data collection equipment was cognitive status standard questionnaire of MMSE and Glasgow Coma Scale. The data were analyzed by repeated measures, statistical tests, and t-test
Results: There were not any meaningful differences in the consciousness and cognitive condition of two groups. However, cognitive status score was higher in cases than controls in the 60th minute.
Conclusion: According to the results, before-shock-education had effects on the patients’ cognitive condition. Patients who had education before electroconvulsive therapy about causes and benefits of using this method, execution method, and temporary symptoms had better cognitive condition. Therefore for reducing symptoms after electroconvulsive therapy it is necessary to have suitable education before.
