Background & Aim: Caregivers of cancer patients endure significant levels of stress, depression, and mood disturbances. Non-pharmacological methods are among methods of reducing anxiety, stress and depression, which are of interest because they are cheaper and have fewer side effects and are easier to use. One of the non-pharmacological methods is using complementary treatments such as aromatherapy. Thus, the study aimed to assess the impact of rose aromatherapy on anxiety, stress, and depression levels in mothers of children with cancer at Shahid Motahari Hospital in Urmia in 2023.
Materials & Methods: This study was semi-experimental research with a pre-test and post-test design. 80 mothers of children with cancer were selected using convenience sampling method based on the inclusion criteria. The participants were then randomly assigned to two groups of control and intervention, using dark-colored sealed envelopes (40 people in the aromatherapy intervention group with rosemary, and 40 people in the control group). In order to collect data, the demographic information questionnaire and the DASS-21 questionnaire were used as a pre-test and post-test. Aromatherapy in the intervention group was performed in the form of inhaling the scent of 40% roses in the intervention group for 15 minutes three times a week for 2 weeks. No intervention was done in control group. At the end of the intervention, both groups completed the questionnaire again. The data were analyzed using Chi-square and t-test statistical tests in SPSS version 16.0.
Findings: A statistically significant difference was observed in the mean depression, anxiety, and stress scores in the aromatherapy group before and after the intervention. However, no statistically significant difference was observed in these scores in the control group. Additionally, there were significant differences in the mean scores of depression, anxiety, and stress before and after the aromatherapy between the two groups. (p <0.001).
Conclusion: The results show the positive effect of aromatherapy of the rose essential oil on reducing anxiety, depression, and stress of mothers with a child with cancer. Thus, aromatherapy is suggested as one of the new, easy, and low-risk nursing interventions to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress of mothers with children with cancer.
