Background & Aims: Student satisfaction with their field of study is one of the most challenging educational issues globally, influenced by various factors, including those related to the clinical education environment. This study aimed to determine the predictive role of factors associated with the clinical education environment on medical students' satisfaction with their field of study.
Materials & Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional correlational study was conducted in 2023, using a census method on eligible students. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, an academic satisfaction questionnaire, a clinical environmental stressors questionnaire, a questionnaire on uncivil behaviors of nurses in the educational environment, and a clinical attachment questionnaire. The factors related to the clinical education environment in this study included environmental stressors, uncivil behaviors in the clinical setting, and attachment to the clinical environment. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 18 with descriptive and inferential statistical methods.
Results: A significant inverse linear correlation was found between stressors and satisfaction with the field of study (r = -0.22, p < 0.001). Additionally, students' academic satisfaction had a significant direct relationship with their attachment to the clinical environment (r = 0.125, p = 0.026). However, there was no significant relationship between uncivil behaviors in the clinical environment and students' academic satisfaction (r = -0.032, p = 0.309). An increase of one unit in environmental stressors score resulted in a decrease of 0.18 units in students' academic satisfaction. Conversely, an increase of one unit in attachment to the clinical environment led to an increase of 0.06 units in academic satisfaction.
Discussion: Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that efforts to reduce environmental stressors in the clinical setting can somewhat enhance students' attachment to the clinical environment and their academic satisfaction. Therefore, it is advisable for officials in medical sciences faculties and nursing, midwifery, and paramedical managers at educational treatment centers to eliminate stress-inducing factors, create a safe learning environment, and enhance medical students' attachment to the clinical environment to increase their academic satisfaction.
