Background & Aims: Complications of diabetes, as a chronic disease, can lead to psychological distress in patients. Depression, anxiety, and stress, which are elements of this distress, can impact the management of the disease and its consequences. Therefore, this study aims to compare the effects of bibliotherapy, behavioral activation therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on reducing psychological distress in women with type 2 diabetes.
Materials & Methods: This research employed as a semi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-test approach and included a control group. The study focused on females with type 2 diabetes referred to Sajjad Clinic in Tehran during the first three months of 2023. Sixty participants were selected using convenience sampling and then randomly assigned to four groups. The data were collected in two phases: pre-test and post-test. The depression, anxiety, and stress levels were measured using the Lovibond and Lovibond (1995) scale. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS software version 22.0 using the multivariate covariance analysis method.
Results: The results indicated that all three interventions had a significant effect on depression, anxiety, and stress (P<0.05). Additionally, there was a significant difference between the impact of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy compared to behavioral activation treatment and bibliotherapy on depression, anxiety, and stress (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between the effects of behavioral activation treatment and bibliotherapy for depression (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: It is recommended to introduce mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in medical centers to alleviate psychological distress caused by diabetes complications and medical treatments, owing to its superior efficacy and stability.
